You can change the size or font of the note reference mark, footnote, or endnote exactly as you would any other text. Select the note reference mark, footnote, or endnote, and then on the Home tab, under Font, apply the formatting changes that you want.

You can use footnotes and endnotes in documents to explain, comment on, or provide references to something you've mentioned in your document. Usually, footnotes appear at the bottom of the page and endnotes come at the end of the document or section.
Note: For the Footnote Reference and Endnote Reference styles are available only the Font, Font size, Emphasis, and Font Color options. Other format options such as the Paragraph, Tabs, and Numbering are unavailable (are grayed) for these styles.
Ken wonders if it is possible to change the default numbering format for endnotes from lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, etc.) to uppercase Roman numerals (I, II, etc.). While this can be done manually in the Insert Endnote dialog box, that takes several steps and a change to the default would be much easier and faster.

To fix this, go to Edit>Output Styles and click on the option to "Edit" the style you are using. Go to the Templates section of the part of your citations that are formatting in a different font (e.g. Citations for the in-text Citations, Bibliography for the list of works cited) and convert any text that is not in Plain Font into Plain Font (you may have to do this to all of the reference types, or only a few).

The following information relates to using EndNote in conjunction with Microsoft Office Word. However, correctly formatted EndNote citations and bibliographies can also be generated with other word processing applications. Please refer to the EndNote site for compatibility information.
Where EndNote tools are not available within the word processor, EndNote citations can still be formatted if the word processor is able to save documents in RTF file format. This is explained at the bottom of this page under the heading Other word processing programs.
Note: It is important to select a footnote style when you want to insert footnotes. To view and select a footnote style, select Output Styles and then Open Style Manager from the Edit menu in EndNote. The information on each style will indicate if it is a footnote style. One well-known footnote style is Chicago 16A. Many other styles will work in text and in footnotes (e.g. Harvard, APA).
Alternatively, you can use Convert Citations and Bibliography and Convert to Unformatted Citations. The appearance of your citations will change and you can safely delete them in the text. Afterwards, Update Citations and Bibliography as described in Create a single bibliography from multiple subdocuments.
Important: If the page number does not appear in the citation, add it to the Suffix box instead. Some styles do not have page numbers included in their format. Using the Suffix will skirt the problem.
To exclude the Author or the Year from an in-text citation, or to effect other formatting alternatives, follow the instructions under Add page numbers to a citation above to access the Edit & Manage Citation(s) dialog. Chose the relevant option from the Formatting drop-down and select OK.
Your existing references in Microsoft Office Word can be manually un-formatted by using the Convert to Unformatted Citations command under the Convert Citations and Bibliography drop-down in the Bibliography group of the EndNote tab in Microsoft Office Word (Mac: from the CWYW Tools drop-down on the floating EndNote toolbar in Word for Mac). The appearance of your citations will change and you can safely delete them in the text (using Microsoft Office Word tools like Delete, Backspace or Cut). Afterwards, select Update Citations and Bibliography (Mac: Format button on the floating EndNote toolbar in Word for Mac).

In MLA style, content or bibliographic notes can be styled as footnotes or endnotes. The following directions for adding footnotes and endnotes in Microsoft Word should work for both PCs and Macs, though newer or older versions of Word may have differing layouts or features.
To add a footnote, click in the spot where you want to add the note. Then click the References tab at the top of page. In the Footnotes section, click Insert Footnote. Cite While You Write places field codes around and inside your formatted citations in Word, which allows EndNote to format citations continuously as you write. Removing field codes means deleting the field codes and saving the formatted citations and bibliography as text.
